Welcome to the Historic Branch School Project page. The Branch School District #4 was completed in 1863. The school served the district for 98 years, through the Civil War, and closed in 1961. This project will be utilized &bull; to promote the use of the one room school house &bull; to encourage participation in Branch School events &bull; to educate our community about the school &bull; to celebrate the historical significance this 1900&#39;s school building brings to our rural community &bull; to protect the building and historical artifacts for future generationsPLEASE JOIN US FOR THE BRANCH SCHOOL HISTORICAL DESIGNATION CEREMONY OPEN HOUSE. The ICHC will present a marker sign to the Township which will be installed outside the school building. Calling all amateur photographers: Williamstown Township is hosting the 2nd Annual Photography Contest. This is an opportunity to test your photography skills and compete with other area photographers for prizes. Winning photos may be: <ul><li>featured in the 2025 Township calendar</li><li>posted on the Township websites or social media sites</li><li>used in Township promotional materials such as brochures, event flyers and posters</li></ul>Winners are also eligible for cash prizes. Williamstown Township has been awarded a grant to grow our recycling program! The grant will allow for expanded hours and expanded material collection. Watch our website or Engage Williamstown for updates on this program.Regular recycling will continue this year on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 9am to 3pm in the Township parking lot.Currently, collected items include small metal (cans and aluminum), paper, glass (all colors), cardboard, plastic (plastic bags, plastic lawn furniture or plastic furniture, pails or plant pots are NOT accepted), and Styrofoam (no peanuts).Prohibited items: Hazardous waste or materials, paint, tires, explosives, construction materials, yard waste, gasoline, motor oil, sewage and septic waste.Check <a href="https://williamstown.us.engagementhq.com/">calendar</a> dates for Special Collection dates.Please take the short survey below to help the Township understand community recycling habits and needs.

Grand River between Zimmer and Meridian Roads. The Township Harvest Festival is a free community event featuring local businesses and performers. Why a Harvest Festival?Historically Harvest Festivals celebrate that time of year when farmers gather crops from the fields and people can reflect on the food that they have. Harvest Festivals date back to ancient Britain when people relied on cultivated crops for food, and farmers would give thanks for a good harvest.The Harvest Festival tradition predates Christianity to pagan times. The name derives from the Old English word &#39;Haerfest&#39; meaning &#39;Autumn&#39;. In the United States, historians believe the first gathering of people for a harvest celebration was in 1621 between the Wampanoag Indian tribe and the Pilgrims who had immigrated to America the previous year. This celebration evolved into our modern day Thanksgiving dinner tradition.Harvest Festivals coincide with the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox. The nearest full moon to that date is called the Harvest Moon and this year happens on Friday, September 29th at 5:58 AM. The Harvest Moon may occur occasionally in October. The Harvest Moon provides helpful light to farmers to extend the harvest day into night.Harvest Festivals have been celebrated worldwide. For example, the ancient Egyptian festival occurred during the spring-time harvest. The festival was dedicated to Min, the Egyptian god of vegetation and fertility. This festival included a parade in which the Pharaoh was carried through the town, followed by a great feast. The Egyptian people celebrated with music, dancing, and sports.Modern Harvest Festivals are celebrated at places such as churches, schools, and community parks. The celebrations may include music, dancing, and sports like the Egyptian festivals and incorporate seasonal activities. 3rd Annual Harvest Festival

Williamstown Township, with the advice of the Township Cemetery Committee, has designated space at Summit Cemetery to provide green burial options. The Natural Burial Area located in the south west section of the cemetery is being developed to accommodate approximately 800. Currently, the burial area has been seeded with wild flowers and grasses, and the sexton has begun laying out plots and trails. This section of the cemetery will also have a scattering garden and shepherd's wall to mark the burial of a loved one. Improvements will continue throughout the next couple of years. Most burials before the mid-19th century were conducted this way, as are many Jewish and Muslim burials today. Green burials are enjoying a resurgence in popularity, for a number of reasons: Simplicity. The idea of wrapping the body in a shroud or placing it in a plain, unadorned coffin appeals to those who prefer their burial arrangement to be simple, natural and unpretentious.Lower cost. Because green burials do not involve embalming, fancy caskets, or concrete vaults, they can be a very cost-effective alternative to conventional burials, lowering the cost by thousands of dollars. If the family supplies their own shroud or coffin, the cost can be further reduced. Conserving natural resources. Each year US cemeteries bury over 30 million board feet of hardwood and 90,000 tons of steel in caskets, 17,000 tons of steel and copper in vaults, and 1.6 million tons of reinforced concrete in vaults. With green burial, fewer resources are used.Eliminating hazardous chemicals. For some, forgoing the embalming process is the main attraction, since embalming fluid contains formaldehyde, a respiratory irritant and known carcinogen. In the US about 5.3 million gallons of embalming fluid are used every year, and funeral home workers are exposed to it routinely.Preserving natural areas. Love of nature and a desire for “eternal rest” in a forever-wild meadow or forest are frequently-cited reasons for choosing green burial. The burial sites restore or preserve a natural landscape populated by native trees, shrubs and wildflowers; the sites offer food and refuge to birds and other wildlife.
