Welcome to the Adopt-a-Tree Program. This program supports our Parks and Recreation Committee's efforts to grow our parks - literally - as new trees are planted each year. In 2022, the Committee and community volunteers worked tirelessly to plant 2000 acorns, and over 500 saplings and mature trees in the southwest quadrant of the park to create a new forest. The community named the new forest "The Red Cedar Woodlands", and the forest was dedicated on October 16, 2022. Each year the Parks & Recreation Committee plans to facilitate a tree planting event to plant additional trees.
The Adopt-a-Tree Program is a volunteer based program facilitated by the Parks and Recreation Committee. The program relies on community involvement to help care for the new plantings in the Red Cedar Woodlands. Volunteers who "adopt-a-tree" are really adopting a zone (or group) of trees - the number of trees is determined by your level of commitment. Adoptees can learn about forestry and participate in the development of the forest which ultimately benefits our community and environment. Caring for a tree zone requires minimal volunteer time but will impact the future of the forest as the new trees need nurturing during their early growth cycle. New trees typically require extra care the first three years of life; the most important being watering the base of the trees. This is a great way for local organizations to provide community service and to protect our environment!
Check out the Adopt-a-Tree brochure, and the agreement document linked on the right. Also available in the documents links are maps with information about the location of plantings and the new trail system circumventing the forest.
Each volunteer signing up for the program, either individual or group, will be honored with a sign posted at their adopted tree zone site. The Township provides all the tools necessary for successful watering.
TEN BENEFITS OF PLANTING TREES 1) Trees are the main source of oxygen. 2) An average tree produces enough oxygen to fulfill the oxygen needs of four people. 3) Trees help in absorbing dust and other pollutants from the air, thus cleaning it. 4) The land under the tree absorbs more rainwater and helps prevent floods. 5) Trees also absorb a considerable amount of sound and help reduce noise. 6) Birds lay their eggs in the nests on trees; thus, trees also help in nurturing many species. 7) Many trees also have medicinal properties and are used in healthcare industries. 8) They also save us from the harmful Ultraviolet rays, which is responsible for skin cancer. 9) Trees are also important for many industries, like Timber, Paper, Rubber, and Silk, helping in economic development. 10) From roots to leaves, every part of a tree is beneficial to us.
